The long-awaited debut solo album from no god., “Wavelength” is equal parts healing and harrowing. Like a long conversation with an old friend, it can be unpredictable and contradictory at times – which makes it all the more revealing. Moments of heartfelt catharsis on highlight “Lost” stand in stark contrast to the jaded wisecracking of album opener “Motion”. But no god.’s rare gift for vivid storytelling is the through-line, whether he’s subverting macho stereotypes on the driving, claustrophobic “Head Up” or chronicling his lowest moments on the album’s confessional centrepiece “Submerged”. Lighter moments like the infectious “Banana Kush” keep the listener on their toes, but nothing here exists in a vacuum. no god. has a lot to say about love, grief and what it truly means to ‘be a man’ in the 21st century, holding the mirror up to the listener. The question is whether or not you like what you see.
B1g Z’s debut solo album ‘We’ve All Been There’ is the culmination of all the sounds, styles, and ideas that Z has honed throughout his 5+ years as an MC, producer, songwriter, and vocalist. While the record can be all over the place sonically – ranging from the boom bap and new age underground styles often heard on The Outdoorsmen’s work on tracks like ‘Long Game’, ‘Humble Brag’, and ‘Be Strong’, to more pop-rap sounds on ‘I Heard’ and ‘Queen Anne’s Lace’, to drum and bass, downtempo trap, and house-adjacent styles courtesy of Āthmaan on ‘Now or Never’, ‘Contact’ and ‘4516’, with the apex of the album being the chilling 7 minute ballad ‘Hemlock Trees’ – Z embraces a number of genres while grounding his debut through personable songwriting and a consistently charismatic presence. He confronts his struggles head on and outlines his growth with a level of wit, charm, and humour rooted in a clear sense of self-awareness. A good portion of the album is produced by Z himself and his right-hand man ProdbyJAXN further showing his range, and he’s able to seamlessly include outside producers klwn cat, Mashoni, and Āthmaan to synthesize with his sound, as well as featured rappers Sneaky Preacher, TreDoes, and no god. contributing key verses that add to the world of ‘We’ve All Been There’.
Nonazz’s second project of the year is what he, and many others, consider to be the pinnacle of his artistic journey so far. ‘Sincerely Nazz’ is a refined showcase of every skill he’s honed as an MC up to the point, assembling a cast of producers both familiar from his earlier works (klwn cat, crimzon merlot, B1g Z, etc.) and widely respected in the underground (August Fanon, DVNTBEATS) to provide a silky smooth, often soulful sound for Nazz to glide on, with enough sonic twists and turns to keep the listener on their toes. As usual, Nazz comes out with a dazzling array of flows, pushing past his previous limits with densely packed rhymes and flashes of his best wordplay. The heavy hitting guest features he called upon each do what they do best on each of their respective tracks, and Nazz excels in complementing their energy. Overall, ‘Sincerely Nazz’ is his most defining body of work to date; a true sum of the skills, aesthetics and achievements he’s amassed.
